It’s been a while since our last post here at the blog! And this is because, luckily, we’ve been really busy!
During the past three months, we have been to Paris, Munich, Singapore, Amsterdam, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Colorado. Most of these trips were to join BIM conferences around the world, and this only means one thing: BIM is thriving and more than that, Archicad is a growing force worldwide!
Despite the usual Revit background noise and its fierce supporters, openBIM workflows are slowly becoming standard on our industry and luckily we are hearing more and more speeches where collaboration, multiplatform and openBIM are buzz words that decorate keynote speeches and conferences.

We are children of the internet era; collaboration, transparency, flexibility and openness are considered almost “universal rights” for our generation, and for all of us it’s difficult to grasp why living on the XXI century we still face issues on interoperability, whether we are talking about OS or software. As a consumer, I can’t accept that companies aren’t just working together to offer the best service and experience.
I think I speak for the majority if I say that one of the things that take a big chunk of our time when we work within teams isn’t the ideation process, nor problem-solving or improving our design; is solving interoperability problems that happen on a daily basis and that impede the normal flow of our work and eventually, the world to become a better place.
Those issues prevent people to look for the best solution and therefore the competition among good ideas and good products; improving the tools we use and the projects and the designs we create. Myths, fear and ignorance have been leading the process of BIM implementation worldwide and just now, after so many people and companies failing and getting back to old ways, the market and the main stakeholders are understanding that we need to work together so everyone can win.

My perception during my participation in the BIM World Conference in Paris last March, is that finally, we are putting together the right mix of people to discuss and understand BIM and its wonderful implications on our old industry: Engineers, Architects, Software Developers, Politicians, developers, Owners, Entrepreneurs and Scholars; because BIM really disrupts and improves the lives of all the stakeholders in our industry.
Over a hundred speakers mainly from France with a few outsiders like myself, run panel-discussion type conferences sharing case studies about the implementation, use, benefits and obstacles of not only the of BIM but also of other related topics as GIS and data, digitalisation, algorithmic design and the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning for optimisation and analysis, Virtual Reality and Augmented reality for coordination and construction, …and much more!
My conference was included within a panel discussion titled: “Contribution of Digital and Digital Models to Eco-Districts” and I shared the stage with Kévin Durepaire (BIM Manager @ Losinger Marazzi SA) and Richard Mongeau and Simon Vidal chief surveyors and from the City of Montréal.
I showed our collaborative project with TAKENAKA: Yilong Linear Loop City making. The project that won the first prize at the Yilong Futuristic City international competition two years ago.
Our take on the topic was to demonstrate how algorithmic design workflows helped the realisation of the designer’s intuitions implementing the sustainability approach and subtle relation of the newly created city with the surrounding fragile landscape.
Also how combining Rhinoceros, Grasshopper with BIM (Archicad) helped on the realisation of the complex geometry of the landscape design and the road-work optimisation (key concept on the project proposal) as well as optimising the project documentation and communication.
The use of TWINMOTION, a super-innovative real-time render engine based on Unreal, helped us not only creating the suggestive renderings and images but also being able to visualise the project in real-time as it evolved helping the team to create quick renders and animations that finally helped to win the award.

After our show we enjoy a couple of great presentations about the digitalisation of the city of Montreal and its use for urban planning, environmental analysis, simulations, etc… and how BIM is becoming a catalyst for the industrial revolution 4.0.
It was a very quick immersion inside the European BIM landscape but I felt truly inspired by the very dynamic environment of the French Conference and all its participants and exhibitors!
We very much look forward to coming back the following years to confirm this growing trend and, why not, enjoy the wonderful Parisian food and vibrant nightlife!
